We identify Small Medium Enterprises and female entrepreneurs and screen them to select a list of participants who meet the criteria to most benefit from our support. One-to-one support is then provided to each entrepreneur by providing dedicated COVID-19 impact analysis and contingency planning to these enterprises. Enterprises are then placed onto the Zimba Mart platform, which will help expose them to both local and international markets. To enable them to benefit fully from the platform we assist enterprises in the digitization process, providing them with capacity building support in digital marketing strategies, product branding and packaging and inventory management. Zimba Mart data tracking tools report against sales and performance of e-commerce business.

Stage 4: Transition to Scale

Initially, the Zimbamart platform attracted only female vendors dealing in groceries. Currently, we are identifying all women-owned business which have been severely impacted by COVID-19 and placing them onto the women-tailored e-commerce platform in order to adjust to the market dynamics created by COVID-19 lock down actions and begin to take advantage of the latent market opportunities offered by e-commerce in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Problem

The world is facing an unprecedented crisis in the emergence of the corona virus pandemic, with well over 100 countries engaged in some sort of lock down measures, including Uganda. Women-owned Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), which make up an estimated one fifth of the Ugandan economy in terms of employment, have suffered disproportionately as a consequence of this action, with substantial negative impacts for local job security and economic development. These enterprises therefore require specific interventions to assist them in surviving through this period of major uncertainty.

Solution

Zimba mart aims to contribute to protecting the growth trajectory of the Ugandan economy by protecting women-owned/led Small Medium Enterprises from COVID-19 related impacts, protect employment opportunities for women and young people and simultaneously help women-owned/led Small Medium Enterprises capitalize on the growing e-commerce market.

Target Beneficiaries

Our target beneficiaries are women-owned or led businesses in Uganda. In Uganda, nearly 4 in every 10 business owners are female and the 2019 Master card Index of Women Entrepreneurs’ Report notes that women are achieving gender equality in entrepreneurial activity. This indicates that women are thriving despite various country-wide and gender-specific barriers to success, including social norms, poor networks and household-level constraints.

Mission and Vision

Our mission is to enable the empowerment and development of women entrepreneurs in Africa by providing cross-cutting e-solutions and technology to provide affordable market accessibility and capacity building. Our Vision is to be the leading women's e-commerce provider in Africa by 2025 with over 5,000,000 merchants fully equipped with business, IT and marketing skills with over 50,000,000 customers to support them.

Competitive Advantage

Currently, no existing e-commerce solution explicitly targets and benefits women-owned Small Medium Enterprises. We also ensure that platform and programmatic support is tailored to ensure clear performance superiority for our target group.

Planned Goals and Milestones

Our strategy is to ensure that women-owned businesses survive the COVID-19 lock down and are therefore still in a position to support the Ugandan national growth strategy. We are considering the impact of the crisis on the businesses from all angles (cash, supply chain, people) and building a tailored action plan in collaboration with the Small Medium Enterprise leader to support response and recovery from a strong foundation of data. To protect them against adverse changes to the rapidly evolving business context we will be holding weekly check-ins to monitor progress against the resiliency action plan, which will enable enterprises to implement rapid adjustments in response to the evolving situation. We will also ensure that this platform fosters additionality by facilitating easier access to Uganda’s growing domestic middle-class consumer base and enhancing up- and downstream supply-chain resiliency which will likely have beneficial impacts on rural suppliers. We plan on scaling our reach towards Kenyan and Tanzanian entrepreneurs.
