As cases of COVID19 respiratory failure increase, ventilator capacity has been overwhelmed. Since ventilators are expensive, difficult to transport, and slow to manufacture, it has been difficult for health authorities to keep up with the ventilator shortage in many regions. While ventilator splitting has been described, it has inherent risks in the setting of rapidly changing respiratory inflammation and compliance.
The VALENCE InVent Xtend is a low cost device to address crisis ventilator shortages. The device enables a single ventilator to ventilate 2, 3, or 4 patients while retaining the most essential ventilator alarms and ensuring the safety of cohorted patients. This innovative product is highly cost-effective being over 1000-times less expensive than a typical ventilator. This ensures the accessibility of lifesaving ventilators even in low-income regions of the world.
