Safetipin is a technology platform and set of apps that collects data & provides solutions about safety and inclusion in public spaces in cities through crowdsourcing and big data aimed at building a world where everyone can move around without fear

Our data collection process consists of 3 apps. 1. My Safetipin is a free personal safety app (available in English, Hindi, Spanish and Khmer) that helps users make safer decisions about your mobility, based on the safety score of an area. The app uses crowd-sourcing to collect data based on physical infrastructure and the social usage of a public space. 2. Safetipin Nite is an app that is...

Our data collection process consists of 3 apps. 1. The app uses crowd-sourcing to collect data based on physical infrastructure and the social usage of a public space. 2. Safetipin Nite is an app that is used to collect photographs in the night-time. These photographs are uploaded and analysed by our team based on the 8 audit parameters and various sub-parameters. The data collected by the Safetipin Nite app supplements the crowdsourced data that we get through the My Safetipin app and enhances the data coverage we have in a city. 3. Safetipin Site collects city-specific information through a customizable application and integrates them with existing city databases. The app records geo coordinates and images for evidence-based assessment. This tool can also be used to monitor and evaluate the effects of certain projects or changes that the city has instituted. Further the data is analysed to produce GIS layers of maps as well as reports with recommendations for improvement. These are shared with diverse stakeholders. Safetipin aims to improve safety and inclusion in public spaces. Thus, after any changes are made, data can be re-collected in order to measure the level of change. It is therefore a useful tool that can also be for evaluation of projects to improve public spaces.

Stage 5: Scaling

The innovation has been used in more than 40 cities globally. In some cities (ex-Bogota & Delhi) governments have scaled up usage of the tools and made relevant improvements. City governments have expressed continued interest for further interventions and funding.

Problem

Cities are neither designed by nor planned for women and girls. Lack of safe and inclusive infrastructure prevents women from accessing opportunities, exercising choices and having a right to the city. Fear prevents them from them from experiencing the city. Understanding the nature and causes of risk and fear in cities can help in seeking solutions.

Solution

Our innovation uses the safety audit methodology to assess both infrastructure and social usage of public spaces.Through our apps and technology platform, we collect and analyse data as well as rate urban spaces on their safety and inclusion. This comprehensive data is then compiled and presented to stakeholders including governments as recommendations to make decisions on how to make public spaces in cities safer for women and all citizens.

Target Beneficiaries

Our main beneficiaries are women and girls in cities, to help them access public spaces without fear and thereby assert their right to study, to work, to leisure and all that the city has to offer. Our beneficiaries are also city governments who have access to all the data that is collected both through crowdsourcing as well as through collecting and analysing photographs of the city, especially after dark. We believe that this helps them decide priorities of how to address this major issue.

Mission and Vision

Our mission is to build a world where everyone can move around without fear, specially women. Our vision is to make public spaces safer and inclusive for women and girls to enable their rights, accessibility and mobility. We believe that fear, violence and exclusion prevent women from being equal citizens. We do this by providing data to individual citizens to help make safer decisions as well as to city authorities to help make cities safer and more inclusive.

Competitive Advantage

Though there are other organisations and technologies working towards women's safety, they are unlike Safetipin for the following reasons: 1. My Safetipin is not an emergency response app, it is an app to assess and understand a space to make long term sustainable and permanent changes. 2. We quantify data to provide a safety score for people to easily understand it as well as use it. Our Safety Score and scoring for all the collected parameters makes the data easier to work on and easier to monitor progress. 3. We provide infrastructure related recommendations to stakeholders with geo-location for every point with images as evidence. This helps stakeholders to use the data with recommendations for each specific locations.

Planned Goals and Milestones

We have collected data for over 300000 latitude -longitude points in cities around the world. We would like to expand this to more cities. We are working on how machine learning can enhance our data analyses capability as well as help us expand out data collection at a global level. We believe the Safety score that can be useful for city governments as well as private players such as travel portals, property portals etc to give users an ability to assess the safety of areas.
