In response to the global COVID-19 pandemic, Maternity Foundation in collaboration with Copenhagen University, Laerdal Global, International Confederation of Midwives and UNFPA launched new digital content to equip skilled birth attendants in low-resource settings to protect themselves, mothers and newborns from covid-19 while continuing to provide quality care around the time of birth. Additionally, the partners are creating a remote training concept to further build the capacity health care workers remotely.

As part of our focus on strengthening the quality of care through clinical trainings, Maternity developed an innovative smart-phone app called The Safe Delivery App. The Safe Delivery App is an mHealth Tool that teaches and instructs birth attendants in hard-to-reach areas how to manage normal and complicated deliveries through simple, animated clinical instruction films, action cards, basic pr...

As part of our focus on strengthening the quality of care through clinical trainings, Maternity developed an innovative smart-phone app called The Safe Delivery App. The Safe Delivery App is an mHealth Tool that teaches and instructs birth attendants in hard-to-reach areas how to manage normal and complicated deliveries through simple, animated clinical instruction films, action cards, basic procedure guides and a drug list.
How does your innovation work?
The App is based on global clinical guidelines andcontains animated clinical instruction films addressing the seven signal functions of BEmONC (Basic Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care). Additionally, the App features push messages with quiz questions spurring the health worker to use the app to update their knowledge. It also includes easy access to essential drug and equipment lists. The App can be pre-installed on the phone and it is therefore not a requirement to have network connection or Internet access.

Solution

The Safe Delivery App is a smartphone application that provides skilled birth attendants with direct and instant access to evidence-based and up-to-date clinical guidelines on Basic Emergency Obstetric and Neonatal Care. The App leverages the growing ubiquity of mobile phones to provide life-saving information and guidance through easy-to-understand animated instruction videos, action cards and drug lists. It can serve as a training tool both in pre- and in-service training, and equips birth attendants even in the most remote areas with a powerful on-the-job reference tool.
