URIDU (www.uridu.org) is a German NGO that is providing illiterate rural women with vital knowledge. We have been developing and pioneering accessible audio learning in the global south over the last 3 years. URIDU is combining relevant, localized expert audio contents with easily usable hard- and software. We are spreading health education and more using our solar-powered MP3 players and mobile web applications. URIDU has shown that educating marginalized women using audio is a feasible endeavor that yields excellent results. We did this in successful pilot projects in Tanzania, Uganda and the Congo. Now it’s the time to take bold steps to maximize impact by reaching out to as many women as possible. Our goal is to turn accessible audio learning into a global driving force for women’s empowerment and gender equality. There is one benchmark we have to aim for when it comes to accessible knowledge: Wikipedia. Wikipedia has been a truly disruptive force — it has become the ubiquitous source of knowledge for the literate world. Following their example, we will provide a freely accessible, curated resource of relevant audio content. It will be made available under a creative commons license. Accordingly, we are calling it Audiopedia. What distinguishes us from Wikipedia is that we have to provide accessibility to the contents for illiterate beneficiaries. Problem

Health and nutrition education programmes tend to engage women, because of their perceived traditional roles as primary care givers. Yet, 500 million women worldwide are illiterate. There is a strong need for a robust and scalable approach which does not rely on the written word to provide knowledge to marginalized populations. Audiopedia is tackling this challenge.

Solution

Audiopedia is a global online project combining relevant and localized Social and Behavior Change Communication (SBCC) audio contents with easily usable hard- and software. The web site Audiopedia.io was designed to provide access to open knowledge to both CBOs/NGOs and individuals. CBOs/NGOs can benefit by using it as part of their SBCC strategy, as it enables them to search, download, embed and share audio files in several languages.

Target Beneficiaries

Our main beneficiaries are women and girls, with a specific focus win marginalized and illiterate rural women. Our technological solutions adapt to the corresponding situation of each target group. Our solar-powered Audiopedia Players work even in the remotest areas where's our applications for smartphones and feature phones allow us to scale our impact.

Mission and Vision

It is a requirement of fairness to make knowledge accessible to each and every woman, better today than tomorrow. Access to knowledge is a fundamental human right. Therefore we have to free knowledge from literacy. For the first time ever we have the technologies to do this. Knowledge is power, open know­ledge is empowerment. We can turn accessible audio learning into a global driving force for women’s empowerment and gender equality.

Competitive Advantage

Our approach takes the best from radio broadcasting and Wikipedia and combines it in a unique approach. Our solar-powered Audiopedia players allow us to reach to the remotest areas of this planet, such as the rainforests of the Congo Basin. But at the same time we scale our approach by using innovative mobile technologies. We have a scalable and robust solution to make health education freely accessible for anybody, anywhere.

Planned Goals and Milestones

Our goal is to provide audio contents in 100 languages to reach 100 million women per year by 2024. We will open source all the software we have built to make our contents accessible. And we are planning to further expand accessibility by using chat-bots and programmable voice calls. We are also improving the usability of our contents for NGOs, allowing them to use our audio contents with messaging services such as WhatsApp in order to provide audible health education with just one click.

The Team Behind the Innovation

Felicitas Heyne (President and Founder) is a well-known psychologist and best-selling book-author. She is an International Affiliate of the American Psychological Association (APA) and Member of the German Psychological Association (BDP). She has worked on women's topics for more than 25 years. Marcel Heyne holds a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration and Management (Comillas Pontifical University, Spain). He has been a successful internet entrepreneur for more than 20 years.
