MOVES® SLC™ is the only portable, transportable circle-circuit ventilator available on the market; the device recycles the patient's breathing gas and employs user-replaceable N95 filters to stop the spread of bacteria and viruses. The integrated oxygen concentrator runs cyclically to provide a high FiO2 to patients, and the ventilator cartridge installed in the MOVES® SLC™ is designed to scrub CO2 from the breathing circuit in order to continuously supply patients with breathable air. The system provides variable suction between 100-325 mmHg to allow the medical care provider to remove fluids, tissue, bone, gases, and infectious materials from wounds or from a patient’s airway or respiratory support system. The Patient Monitoring System integrated into the MOVES® SLC™ offers real-time feedback that can assist medical care providers with patient assessment and treatment decisions. Available ports, located on the patient connection panel of the device, are intended to be connected to a patient in order to monitor their physiological parameters over time. MOVES® SLC™ can quickly be set up bedside in any location, inside or outside the hospital, to provide immediate intensive care capability, including ventilation, oxygenation, vital signs monitoring, and suction, without the need for compressed oxygen, and while operating on battery power. Being portable and transportable, MOVES® SLC™ can stay with the patient through intra-hospital transport, or through inter-hospital transport.
The MOVES® SLC™ is intended to provide continuous or intermittent ventilatory support for the care of individuals who require mechanical ventilation. The device also provides supplemental oxygen-enriched air, physiological monitoring and data, and a suction pump for aspiration and removal of fluids, tissue, gases, or infectious material. The intended population is adults and pediatric patients who weigh between 10kg and 120kg.
Mission and Vision
Thornhill Medical aims to design, develop and manufacture unique and technologically advanced respiratory based medical devices. The goal of the MOVES® SLC™ was to develop a compact, portable, fully-integrated, multi-capability life support system which does not rely on compressed oxygen tanks and can be used by medical personnel operating in all environments and with any level of training, from initial emergency call to advanced life support.
MOVES® SLC™ generates oxygen from ambient air through its embedded oxygen concentrator and can deliver an FiO2 of up to 93%. It consumes significantly less oxygen than other ventilators thanks to Thornhill Medical's patented circle-circuit ventilator technology. If an FiO2 greater than 93% is required, it can provide an FiO2 of 99% while consuming less than the equivalent of QTY(2) D-sized O2 cylinders in a 24 hour period, independent of the patient's minute ventilation. MOVES® SLC™ can also be used as part of an anesthesia workstation to reduce consumption of gas anesthesia. It is intended to be easy to use, can be operated by medical personnel with any level of training, and is designed to operate wherever and whenever advanced patient care is required. Additionally, MOVES® SLC™ can operate on battery power for over 6 hours during normal operation.
Planned Goals and Milestones
Thornhill Medical is currently scaling production of MOVES® SLC™ in order to meet the ventilator requirements of hospitals in Canada. In addition, Thornhill is considering several future functional enhancements for MOVES® SLC™, including the integration of ultrasound functionality, wireless remote control, the generation of electronic medical records, and autonomous control of a patient's blood oxygenation and ventilatory settings.
The Team Behind the Innovation
Thornhill Medical was spun off from the University Health Network, Toronto, Canada, in 2003 to commercialize the ideas and research of Drs. Joe Fisher and Ludwik Fedorko, Steve Iscoe, Jim Duffin and a group of founding engineers. The Thornhill Medical team includes clinicians with advanced training and expertise in critical care as well as physiology and engineering.
