Kytabu is a textbook leasing mobile app for curriculum textbooks used in the Kenyan education system by 11.8 million students. Built to provide low-cost access to digitalized versions of all Kenyan textbooks, Kytabu enables teachers and students to rent textbooks a page at a time, a chapter at a timeor full book for time periods varying from one day to one week, one month and one school term. This drastically reduces the cost of books from $10 to $0.0018 an hour.As an ebook access platform, Kytabu that allows users to log in and use mobile money to credit a virtual wallet on the application. This virtual wallet can be directly credited by an individual, a school, a government body or donor/good-will supporter globally. This then gives the user a mobile repository of finance for learning content never previously available to them. The Kytabu textbook library is a cloud-based but very small data consuming store that a user can choose books that are of interest to them and download to their device. Once the download is complete, the user can then select the book of interest and choose the size of the content required and the amount of time they require the content. This is already costed for the end user and a quick mobile payment is made allowing the user to access the content for the time period selected. Once the time period expires, the content is stored for access on the device locally, reducing the cost for further downloads.

Stage 4: Transition to Scale

Kytabu is an android application that can be downloaded for free on mobile devices. Kytabu enables students and teachers to download curriculum required textbooks, then rent/lease the books for a day, week, month or school term using mobile money. The user can also get assessment tests, audiobooks and subject matter videos Kytabu creates with local teachers on the application. Kytabu is currently on a go-to-market campaign with 8230 users and increasing by 46 users a day on average. We are increasing the books on the application to our target of 5000 from the 8 publishers we have in Kenya. Kytabu's goal is 150,000 Kytabu users bythe end of 2018 in Kenya.

Problem

1 in 16 students in Kenya can access and affordability the textbooks they require for classroom study. Teachers also face similar challenges with logistics of textbook distribution in most off-grid areas impossible to overcome. The unavailability or basic learning resources is at the heart of the poor class literacy and numeracy progression of students and limiting teacher support in Kenya. Starting with the basics is fundamental in helping student get a better foundational framework.

Solution

In Kenya, there are more mobile devices than radios, and more that 90% of their subscribers use mobile money with 78% accessing the internet at least once a day. These devices have overhauled the financial sector, health sector and can change the education sector in the distribution of learning content on smartphones. With publishers, the owners of the content, eager to get past the distribution problem, an e-reader application with a mobile money wallet has become a viable solution.

Target Beneficiaries

Teachers and their students in primary an secondary school with access to government-provided computers and tablets (937,000 devices are currently in 6,817 schools around Kenya) and those that have access to smart devices as well. The content we use is the nationally approved curriculum content and the same books that students would have in classrooms across the country. We enrich this content with audiobooks and video snippetsby teachers and animators to elaborate on the core material.

Mission and Vision

Our mission is to use digital solutions available to the larger public to remove the barriers to content access for teachers and students in schools in Africa. The vision we have is to see education systems in Africa empowered by technology to improve access, affordability, and opportunities for learning youth from an early age.

Competitive Advantage

KYTABU is an application built inKenya with Africans in mind. The design is culturallyinclined, payment models (renting over buying) are continent-specific, the content is language and culturally relevant and the technology is easily accessible to students. We have pioneered and perfected the leasing model that is now called 'pay-per-paper-view' on mobile devices. Unlike any competitor, Kytabu hosts a local mobile wallet on the application allowing users to pay using the already ubiquitous mobile money solutions in the East African market. Together with a governmentapproved partnership with schools, Kytabu is working to fill the devices in 2500 schools as a starting point of our scaling ability in Kenya. This, not to mention the anticipation by the private school also using the national education curriculum in Kenya for their students.

Planned Goals and Milestones

We are currently recruiting teachers for our video audio and animation productions. The younger and more tech-savvy teachers graduating in the last few years are excited to be part of the digital education revolution and the additional revenue stream is a welcome benefit. As we create our own videos, we will cater for cultural differences and language preferences by students in our target groups.
