KAINO is a web and mobile app that was developed to teach children how to READ and WRITE in 1 month while at home during this lockdown where pre-primary schools have been indefinitely closed in Uganda.

KAINO is an integrated multi-channel learning program that's designed to ensure that millions of nursery school-going children get access to quality curriculum-aligned STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) blended lesson guides that parents and teachers can use to deliver lessons using our web and mobile applications. Based on the National Early Childhood curriculum of a country of interest, we redevelop the curriculum by blending in the STEM approach for early mental stimulation and the British Phonics approach to cement literacy skills which we consider to be the foundation of all learning. KAINO can improve the cognitive, socio-emotional, language development skills and impact the lives of over 1 million nursery school-going children and  25,000 ECD teachers in Uganda alone who don't have access to quality content fit for the 21st-century learners. We have fully embraced student-centered pedagogy; Including daily learning guides, interactive audio & video content, workbooks, daily assessment platforms, digital storybooks, daily study activity packs, and progress tracking function to ensure that students not only receive instructions but instruction that enables them to learn. At KAINOafrica, innovation and technology are transforming learning outcomes for children. We not only develop in-depth teacher training and support programs but also take data collection in the early education sector seriously to enable policymakers to make data-driven decisions.

Stage 4: Transition to Scale

After the pilot tests that we run in three different parts of Uganda, we are currently running the KAINO model in partnership with The Mastercard Foundation in six different parts of Uganda including one refugee settlement. We have trained over 420 rural women in adult literacy so that they can train their own children, trained and employed over 24 rural nursery teachers to continue teaching nursery children in the rural areas, trained over 1,200 children how to read and write. We currently have over 500 users of our free trial product.

Problem

We noticed that majority of Ugandan children are in school but not learning due to poor quality content lacking in creativity and innovation. Literacy and numeracy levels among school-going age children are so low according to the UWEZO Uganda report of 2015 which showed that over 80% and 60% of primary school-aged children in Uganda can't do basic mathematics and read basic sentences respectively leading to over 7 million primary school children in Uganda not progressing to secondary school.

Our lesson guides’ service will enable caregivers and parents to access and deliver STEM blended lessons via our printed workbooks, web and mobile applications to their children in a bid to prepare them for the future workspace. All this quality content can be accessed at 80% less of the current market price.
