The stove has a detachable filter to remove impurities and also comes with a 10 liter collapsible storage bag where sanitized water is stored reducing counter contamination during storage. K24 a Kenyan top media captured the design process as per the link https://youtu.be/BVfYQGBWgRs The stove was designed to address a challenge of high prevalence of water borne diseases in humanitarian settings through a collaborative effort with the vulnerable communities. The water jacket durability, safety and ease of use was tested seeing tremendous improvement. The research team was able to identify quality the right material for the water jacket from initially using Aluminum/Anodized Aluminum which with longer use discolored to aluminum that was anodized(hardened through a process that rendered it nonreactive) was a good excellent heat conductor (superior to stainless steel), scratch-resistant, and lightweight yet very strong. Vimeo an international media organization followed up the design process for Huffington post as per this link https://vimeo.com/144729448 The stove has greatly improved women and children resilience to COVID-19 through reduced in house pollution and consuming untreated water.

Problem

Multiple outbreaks of cholera, acute Watery diarrhea, measles and gastrointestinal tract-related problems directly linked to consuming bacteria infested water. The emergence of Covid-19 which is easily trasmitted through washing hands and consuming untreated water has added more pain to an already suffering populations from the current water that is infested with faecal materials due to lack of toilets for vulnerable communities in Kenya rural and urban informal settlements.

Solution

Jiko Raha a fuel-efficient biomass stoves featuring an innovative inbuilt jacket that can be filled with 3 liters of water enabling the user to simultaneously boil water thus sanitizing it whilst cooking thus availing safe drinking water free of disease causing microorganisms. The stove has a detachable filter to remove impurities and also comes with a 10 liter collapsible storage bag where sanitized water is stored reducing counter contamination during storage and vulnerability to COVID-19

Target Beneficiaries

Vulnerable women and children Rural and urban informal settlements in Kenya , Rwanda , Ethiopia and Botswana with high exposure to infectious diseases Middle class and humanitarian settings in Sub Saharan Africa Ealry child hood institutions

Mission and Vision

Vison :- Women and children with resilience to water borne Diseases. Mission :-Accelerating access to safe drinking water and clean cook stoves thus reduced incidence of waterborne diseases , children who miss school as a result of water-related illnesses reduced and infection to covid-19.

Competitive Advantage

The innovation is embedded within the design, operationalization of a more efficient, cleaner and cost effective solution in the humanitarian setting. Initially one would need to have two cooking pots for cooking and boiling water which has been eliminated by multitasking element thus saving fuel and time. Other water purification methods are costly ,slow and not sustainable and need external power to operate. The involvement of the end user in process unlike other products that are never tested or gives the end user an opportunity to test. Jiko Raha an innovative technological solution was designed, piloted to fit the social, economic and cultural context of the target communities and to create benefits for users and the local environment they live in. Households are able to incur zero cost in water sanitization which has contributed to reduction of water borne diseases which furthers reduces health costs leaving families with money to invest in other projects.

Planned Goals and Milestones

Business model that incorporates stove distribution through Household energy centers and last mile enterprenuers is on course with sales ongoing. Refining the production process to increase efficiency and product outlook, developing MEL process for monitoring usage on real time, marketing and business development processes.
