The motivation to move our bodies is an essential human need. Drivedeck was originally designed as a shared mobility device however specialist therapy and teaching centres discovered its ability to promote motivational teaching for switch and control access even in the most challenged individuals. Using a fine track (temporary or permanent) the Drivedeck keeps the user totally safe whilst they find a way to make the tool move. Repeat activity allows therapist to train individuals to press switches or controls and achieve progression leading to optimum autonomy. We believe this is due to kinaesthetic learning. Many individuals that are helped with this device have never done a single thing for themselves, not spoken, changed the channel on the TV or left a room autonomously and this device allows them the choice to learn to do that and so much more. For those with degenerative conditions such as MND it provides optimum autonomy as physical and intellectual capacity decline. For those in rehabilitation it provides ways to rediscover lost linkages and practice skills in total safety. Drivedeck is used for empowering the most vulnerable and excluded individuals in our communities to use technology for an inclusive future by encouraging a physically rewarding and engaging activity. Promotion of this personal independence and proactivity ensures that they are not left in total dependence and isolation.

Problem

The cost of powered mobility devices is too high for most people even in advanced economies. If individuals can finance powered mobility, only those who can use a joystick well are allowed to use powered mobility for safety reasons. The abandonment rate for powered wheelchairs is very high due to inaccurate assessments. Disabled and aged people are the most excluded from access to digital communication and public spaces, but are those in global society who could most benefit from it.

Solution

Drivedeck was originally designed so the many children who could never afford a personal powerchair would have the chance to try moving themselves autonomously and learn switch access so vital for connection into the 4IR. The Drivedeck provides the opportunity for the severely disabled to prove themselves capable of communication, mobility, and autonomy often for the first time in their lives. The Drivedeck facilitates accurate switch and control prescriptions devices reducing abandonment.

Target Beneficiaries

All Special Education Needs centres, rehabilitation centres and assistive technology centres around the world. By providing the shared tool to a single centre, every person regardless of their challenges can safely be assessed, trained and motivated to reach their goals, regardless of their financial or physical challenges and where personal powered mobility and communication devices are provided Drivedeck saves money by facilitating accurate assessments.

Mission and Vision

Give everyone the chance to try to prove themselves and have great fun whilst doing it! Provide teachers, therapists, health workers and families a low-cost, flexible way to help the most vulnerable in society to help themselves be inclusive in society through motivational, fun and safe mobility technology.

Competitive Advantage

No other products exist in this market. Smile Smart Technology is the innovator, developer and manufacturer of this unique device along with the established teaching methods developed in conjunction with the technology.

Planned Goals and Milestones

We want to see it used as widely as possible in schools and specialist centres in high, low and middle income countries where disability provision in assistive technology is expensive, unavailable or low-quality. Uptake in civic centres and public spaces to provide inclusive access to those people with disabilities and the elderly as part of good universal design provision.
