Conservation X Labs has built a handheld, portable, easy-to-use, low cost, and extremely rapid device that can determine the presence or absence of any species with an available genetic sequence. This DNA Barcode Identification Tool (DNA BIT) was originally built for rapid, low cost, field-based DNA testing for wildlife trafficking in the developing world. The design constraints of this tool – based on democratizing molecular genetics to everyone everywhere - now provides an advantage for scaling up Covid-19 testing in low resource environments. Conservation X Labs built the DNA BIT to require only a relevant genetic sequence in order to design any new identification test needed. This approach has the huge advantage of making assay development, for which we have a proprietary methodology, both facile and flexible for any specific genetic diagnostic question needed. All necessary diagnostic steps – sample collection, preparation, reactions, and results – are integrated into a single device that can deliver results in less than 45 minutes.
