At CommonLit.org, teachers can access a collection of over 2,000 high-quality, high-interest reading passages and formative assessment tools to spark classroom discussions and track student progress. Included in the collection are informational and literary texts that cover a range of subject matter spanning history, culture, politics, the arts, and more. Texts with strong female role models empower girls to break gender stereotypes. Students read texts at their appropriate reading levels, answer comprehension questions and discuss what they read with their classmates. Our award-winning reading program is research-based and delivered 100% free for teachers, students, and parents.

Problem

Millions of students around the world do not have basic reading and writing skills. This problem disproportionately affects children who live in poverty and attend under-resourced schools where teachers lack high-quality instructional materials, have few professional development opportunities, and limited access to technology.

Solution

CommonLit has been designed to address these challenges. CommonLit's intuitive platform nudges teachers to use best practices and allows them to easily monitor student progress. Digital supports for struggling readers are found in every lesson —including an annotation tool, read-aloud function, glossary, translation features, and in-text guiding questions. In offline environments, CommonLit lessons can be downloaded as PDFs to be printed or shared via thumb drives.

Target Beneficiaries

CommonLit serves over 17 million teachers and students around the globe. Since 2018, our presence has grown across each continent by 67-73%. CommonLit's focus is serving the most under-resourced schools and students, including those in low-connectivity environments.

Mission and Vision

CommonLit is dedicated to ensuring that all students, especially students in Title I schools, graduate with the reading, writing, communication, and problem-solving skills they need to be successful in college and beyond. We believe in providing teachers with all the resources they need to set their students up for success, while also encouraging best practices in the classroom.
